JCC plans lectures, presentations during Earth Week Celebration

Jefferson Community College will hold an Earth Week Celebration Monday through April 26, featuring several activities to raise awareness of environmental issues.

The weeklong celebration will include daily lectures on ecology-related topics. Lectures are free and open to the public.

JCC also will offer many eco-friendly contests and activities for students such as a tree- and flower-identification photo contest, a campus trail pickup followed by a hiking and biking event, a can-it contest with campus clubs and organizations competing to collect the most deposit bottles/cans, a seedling sale and an Arbor Day tree-planting project.

The public is invited to the following Earth Week lectures held in Room 6-218 in the Jules Center (Building 6):

Monday:

Recycling and Waste Management Challenges in the North Country, with lecturers Jan M. Oatman and Sayre Stevens of the Development Authority of the North Country, 12:20 to 1:15 p.m.

Tuesday:

It’s All About the Water , with Steven A. Porter, energy program director at JCC , 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Wednesday:

Green Jobs-Green NY: Residential Energy Workshop, with Jerry K. Loch, educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County, 12:20 to 1:15 p.m.

Thursday:

Taking a Charge: Community Energy Policy Primer, with Raymond E. Peterson, professor of political science at JCC, 12:30 to 1:45 p.m.

April 26:

Leafing a Legacy: JCC’s TREE Campus USA Designation, with Matthew R. Lambert, chairman of the JCC Ever Green Committee, who will discuss the TREE Campus USA program, what JCC has done to achieve TREE Campus Designation and what the college must do to maintain the status, from 12:20 to 2 p.m.

Arbor Day Tree Planting Ceremony, immediately following the Leafing a Legacy presentation. Planting will take place on the JCC athletic field along Interstate 81.
