Norwood-Norfolk baseball downs Massena in opener; Salmon River rallies past Canton

MASSENA - Cody Smith pitched five scoreless innings for the win and went 3-4 with a triple in helping to lead the Norwood-Norfolk Central varsity baseball team to a 6-1 decision over Massena in an NAC interdivisional matchup on Thursday.

Smith fanned eight, walked six and allowed just two hits to earn the win in the season debut for the Flyers, who built a 6-0 lead before the Raiders broke through for their only run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior lefty Brandon Short came on to close out the win, allowing just one more hit and striking out two through the final two frames.

Tyler Haas went the first four innings in taking the loss for the Raiders (0-2). He struck out five, walked three and gave up two hits. Isaiah Dillabough (6K, 3BB, 3H, 3ER) worked the final three innings in relief.

Smith also scored a pair of runs and broke the game open in the top of the sixth with a two-out, two-run single up the middle that put the Flyers ahead 6-0. Troy Kovach came around to score a pair of runs. Short singled and scored a run. Barry LaBar also had a hit while Cody Rust and Zeb Brown came around to score the other Flyer runs.

For the Raiders, David Phillps doubled to lead off the bottom of the sixth then eventually scored with two outs in front of a passed ball. Connor Paquin led off the game with a single and Kyle Ward singled to account for the other Massena hit.

The Flyers return to action on Saturday at home against Potsdam starting at 1 p.m. while the Raiders host a twinbill against St. Lawrence Central today starting at 4 p.m.

In other NAC baseball action on Thursday, a pair of Central Division games saw Salmon River outscore Canton 9-4 and Franklin Academy edge OFA 8-7 while Madrid-Waddington gained a 14-3 East Division win at home over Chateaugay and Edwards-Knox overpowered West Division rival Hammond 31-9.

Salmon River 9, Canton 4: In Fort Covington, Burt Gray went the distance for the win as the Shamrocks used a seven-run surge in the bottom of the fourth inning to reverse a 4-1 deficit before going on to down the Bears in their season opener.

M-W 14, Chateaugay 3: At Jim Rishe Field, Greg Thompson settled down after a shaky start and fanned 11, walked two and surrendered five hits - two to losing pitcher Greg Holmes (both doubles) in a tossing the complete-game win.

Zach Brock finished 3-4 with a double and four RBI as M-W scored eight in the second inning.

Harrison VanBuren recorded a 2-3 day with a triple and a double and two RBI. MikeThew chipped in double and a single and three RBI. Jacob Barney, Jim Miller, and Terry Crump (RBI) also singled.

Holmes pitched just two innings allowing eight runs of six walks and three hits.

Kelly Gibson fanned four in relief allowing five walks and seven hits. Zach Cowan, Nick Ashline, and Devin LaBare each singled.
