WADDINGTON - After two consecutive heartbreaking losses in World Fishing Network’s Ultimate Fishing Town USA Contest, Waddington is back on the leaderboard for the 2013 contest.

Organizers of Waddington’s 2012 Ultimate Fishing Town USA contest bid said in February they had no plans to nominate the community again this year so that community members could focus their energies ond the August Bassmaster Elite tournament.

The town placed second in the Fishing Town USA contest the last two years, winning $5,000 each time. In 2012, Waddington led the polls until the last half hour of the contest.

But after a nomination from an anonymous resident in early March, the town’s bid is picking up support.

As of 5 p.m. Thursday, Waddington held sixth place with 243 votes. The leader, Cape Hatteras, N.C., had approximately 1,200 votes.

There is still a chance for Waddington to come out ahead. Voting ends May 24. People are eligible to vote four times per 24-hour period, or once every six hours.

FishCap Coordinator Donald R. Meissner was not aware of Waddington’s bid Thursday, but said he will be following up on the contest.

“Waddington is one of the most unique towns,” Mr. Meissner said. “I do believe that many people have heard that this area has the world’s greatest fishing, which is why the Elite BASS Series has chosen to hold its contest here.”

The town and region have “practically everything freshwater fish” from bass, muskie, walleye, northern pike, trout, perch and bullhead to carp, Mr. Meissner said.

The contest’s top prize is $25,000 and a feature about the winning town broadcast on the World Fishing Network. Eight $3,500 regional prizes will also be awarded to the runners up.

Contest winnings could help support the town’s efforts to host the Bassmaster Elite Tournament scheduled for Aug. 8 to 11, Mr. Meissner said.
