CARTHAGE — Margaret O’Dell, 80, 39489 NYS Rte. 3, died Friday morning at the Country Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, where she had been a resident for a short time.

Born in Watertown on January 17, 1933, the daughter of William H. & Sarah Ellen VanTassel Hammond, she attended the North Wilna and Riverbank Elementary Schools, before graduating from Carthage High School with the Class of 1951. She married George Christman, who died in 1958.

She married Kenneth O’Dell on August 20, 1960 at the First Baptist Church in Carthage. Mrs. O’Dell was a Legal Stenographer for the law offices of Smith & Moran, James Butler, Roger Williams and also the Town of Wilna Housing Authority. She was a member of the United Community Church, Carthage, where she served as a deacon, trustee and elder. She was a member of the Riverbank Singing Needles, the Rural Letter Carrier’s Auxiliary and was a 4-H leader. She enjoyed researching genealogy, camping, fishing, traveling, dancing and playing cards.

Mrs. O’Dell is survived by her husband, Kenneth, her daughters and their husbands; Janice & John McMahon, Holly &John McAvoy, all of Carthage and her son and his wife, Kelly & Penny O’Dell, Copenhagen. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her brother, Louis E. Hammond, who died in 1991.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 23rd, in the Chapel of the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage, with the Rev. Jane Wagner, Pastor of the United Community Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Carthage. Visitation will be held at the Funeral Home on Monday evening, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.
