Misleading comments on suicide prevention

After reading the article on suicide response and prevention, I felt compelled to write this letter.

First, Timonty Ruetten, Jefferson County Department of Community Services coordinator of mental health services, needs to be educated on what’s going on in the real world.

First, shame on him for stating that suicide is truly preventable. The families who have lost loved ones to this horrific ordeal, please know that was his opinion. I hope Mr. Ruetten realizes the guilt that he has most likely made these families feel. Trust me, we feel enough already.

Second, I know of no one who thinks suicide is glamorous. After talking with many people who have dealt with suicide, glamorous never comes up in reciting of the event, either from those who attempted or from those who have lost loved ones.

Third, it has been proven that more than not when a person threatens suicide it is a cry for help, not an attention antic. Many are carried out.

I will advise you to please put more money into the mental health programs and more money to the people who are fighting every day to save lives instead of misleading workshops. I speak from someone who not only has lost a loved one to suicide, but as one who fights every day to live.
