MASSENA - The Massena Central varsity baseball team overcame an early deficit to claim a 4-3 NAC Central Division win at home over Gouverneur Central on Monday.

“We’re a young team so it was nice to see the kids come back the way they did today,” said coach Greg Paquin after his squad evened its early-season record to 2-2 by rallying past the Wildcats. “This is the kind of game that makes you a better ball club.”

Senior Joey LaBelle picked up the win in relief for the Raiders, pitching a shutout over the final two innings where he notched five strikeouts and walked one, striking out the side in the seventh to seal the comeback. Rory Corcoran (1.2IP, 3H, 1BB, 1K) started on the hill for Massena. David Phillips (4K, 1H, 3BB) pitched three and a-third innings of solid middle relief.

Aaron McEathron went the distance in taking the loss, fanning eight and walking six while giving up just three hits.

Both teams made the most of their few hits as the Wildcats went ahead 2-0 in their first at-bat after getting an RBI-single from Matt Ashley then an RBI-double off the bal of Hunter Ayen.

The Raiders got on the board with a run in the third when Connor Paquin relayed his only hit of the game into a run on a passed ball. They took their first lead of the game with two runs in their next at-bat where Jeremiah Reagan singled home Tyler Haas then came around to score the go-ahead run on an error.

The Wildcats countered with the tying run in the fifth where Ayen singled-home Ashley before the Raiders regain the lead in the sixth where Haas drew a walk, stole second then scored in front of Reagan’s second clutch hit of the game.

The Raiders will get set to compete at a tournament in Watertown this Saturday, taking on Camden in the first round at the JCCC diamond starting at 11 a.m. Watertown High and Carthage are slated to meet in the other semi-final at the Duffy Fairgrounds. The consolation and championship games are both at 1:30 p.m. at JCC and the Fairgrounds respectively.
