C-P softball team rides fast start to win over P-H

PARISHVILLE - The Colton-Pierrepont varsity softball team got the early lead and made it stand for an 8-4 NAC East Division win over Parishville-Hopkinton on Tuesday at the Parishville Firemen’s Field.

Sabrina Johnson went the distance for the win as the Lady Colts pushed across four runs in their first at-bat. Johnson finished with seven strikeouts and didn’t walk a batter to gain the decision over Nicole White who had two strikeouts and two walks taking the loss.

Andrea Aldous paced C-P offensively going 2-3 with three runs scored. Kathryn Miller singled twice and scored a run. Morgan Doyle went 1-3 with two runs scored while Johnson singled and came round to score once.

Kodi Perkins highlighted the Lady Panthers offense with a double and runs scored. Marlee Wilson rapped a double. Caitlin McGregor, Mary Conventry and Monica Votra had the other P-H hits while Jenna Converse scored the other run.

C-P (4-1) returns to action this Saturday at the Hermon-DeKalb Tournament where it opens against the host team at 10 a.m. while P-H is slated to host East Division rival St. Lawrence Central on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

C-P 20, Tupper Lake 2: At Tupper Lake on Monday, Doyle went 4-for-4 with a triple, a homerun and five runs scored. Teammate Kylie McKinley went 3-for-4 while Aldous was 3-for-5 with a homerun.

Tupper Lake was led by Lizzie Zurek and Jesse Weigand, who each went 1-for-2 with one run scored.

Sabrina Johnson struckout 10 in the win. Zurek was saddled with the loss with five strikeouts. In the other East Division game on Tuesday, Chateaugay beat Tupper Lake 11-3 while West Division matchups saw Lisbon outscore Morristown 9-7, Heuvelton handle Clifton-Fine 24-7 and Edwards-Knox stop Hermon-DeKalb 13-10 while Hammond split a double-header with Harrisville, winning the first game 20-11 and dropping the second 17-6.

Chateuagay 11, Tupper Lake 3: In Chateaugay, the Lady Bulldogs scored in every inning but one en route to improving their record to 2-0 on the young season.

Courtney Boyea picked up the victory while allowing just three hits, all in the seventh inning, while striking out 11. Boyea did not issue a walk but did hit one Lumberjack batter.

Hannah Cook led off the home half of the first with a single and moved around to third on an outfield error. Cook trotted home as Boyea laced a one-out, RBI single with Boyea crossing the plate as Felicity Niles ripped an RBI double. Katie Secore and Gaby LaFleur scored the Bulldogs’ third and fourth runs of the inning, respectively, as Chateaugay was on the move offensively, sending 11 batters to the dish in the opening frame.

Chateaugay capped its second victory of the season with a two-run seventh with Abby Barnes and Danielle Cook reaching base and coming around to score the insurance runs.

Tupper Lake (0-2 in league play, 0-3 overall) broke the no-hit bid of Boyea in the final frame. Jesse Weigand lofted a one-out triple to right and scored on a double off the bat of losing pitcher Lizzy Zurek. Zurek came around to score the final Tupper Lake run as Sidney Kulzer ripped a shot up the middle, then was stranded at third as the Boyea picked up her 11th strikeout of the game with Rachael Young snarring the final out on a pop fly.
