WEST CARTHAGE During its meeting Monday, the village Board of Trustees approved a request to open Getman Park to nightcrawler stalkers.
Village resident Mark Spencer asked for permission to be in the Donald F. Getman Memorial Park on Franklin Street after its 9 p.m. closing for the purpose of collecting earthworms. Mr. Spencers request was granted on the condition that he notify the village police on duty of his intent to be in the park after hours.
The trustees also gave approval for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7227 to hold the Memorial Day parade, which starts in the village and travels across the bridge into Carthage.
A discussion on use of the Franklin Street park was tabled to give trustees time to think about whether usage should be granted only for village residents or should be offered on a first come, first served basis. Currently the park can be reserved only for use by the fire department and for youth activities. The board noted that, if a policy were adopted, someone would have to oversee the compliance.
Following an inspection by the state Department of Health, Mayor Scott M. Burto requested Department of Public Works Superintendent Donald M. Monaghan and Fire Chief Peter Crump Jr. to clean and make repairs in the village community room.
