OFA and Potsdam have met in the Section 10 Class B Baseball Championship for the past six years.

And both showed themselves well equipped to again play for postseason as well as regular season honors in the NAC Central Division in their first meeting of the season on Wednesday.

Blue Devil sophomore Seth Pinkerton and Potsdam senior Ben Miller formed a pitching matchup worthy of a title game as OFA claimed a 3-1 victory.

The Devils climbed to 2-1 on the season and handed the 4-1 Stoners their first loss in divisional play on a day when only one earned run was scored.

Pinkerton struck out three and walked two in a one-hitter while Miller struck out four and walked one in a five-hitter.

“It was just an excellent baseball game between two good teams where both pitchers threw very well, kept the ball down and let their defense make the plays behind them,” said OFA Coach Tom Pinkerton who will lead his team to Massena on Friday.

“Seth (Pinkerton) made very few mistakes on the mound and pitched very well hard and in tight. He did make one mistake, though, to Shawn Clark and Clark really crushed a double back by the fence.”

Clark’s double came with one out in the sixth inning as Potsdam’s lone hit of the day.

Andrew Ace scored the Stoners’ lone run in the second inning where he walked and scored on an infield error. The Devils scored twice in the bottom of the first inning on a walk to Konnor Murdock, an RBI single by Kinnon LaRose and an infield error.

The only earned run of the came in the fourth inning where Andrew Cole tripled and scored on a single by Zach Sharpe. Pat Cosmo produced OFA’s other hits going 2-for-2 with a pair of singles.

FLYERS DOWN M-W

Norwood-Norfolk remained unbeaten on the season at 4-0, 2-0 in NAC East Division play with a 4-2 decision over Madrid-Waddington.

Troy Kovach picked up the win for the Flyers. He held a no-hitter until the fourth inning to finish with an eight strikeout, one walk, four hitter in five and two-third innings. Brandon Short fanned three batters the rest of the way as Norwood-Norfolk scored single runs in the first, second, third and fifth.

Kovach supplied a double and scored twice. Cody Smith ripped a double while Kyler MacIntrye, Kyle Marten, Barry LaBarre, and Zeb Brown all singled.

Mike Thew, Zach Brock, Luke Miller and Terry Crump all singled for M-W.

Greg Thompson took the loss going the distance with eight strikeouts and three walks and allowing six hits.

Malone 14 - Canton 3: Malone erupted for 10 runs in the first inning in NAC Central Division play. Malone (2-1, 2-0 Central) was led by Brandon Welch who homered twice and singled twice while Austin LaMay pitched a complete-game five-hitter while striking out 10. For Canton (0-4, 0-4), starter Avery Slack took the loss while Francesco Palumbo singled twice. Bryant Wentworth also had a big hit.
