Salmon River facing another vacancy on school board

FORT COVINGTON - The Salmon River Central School District Board of Education is looking to fill a vacancy left by Clarissa Chatland, who resigned from her post on April 8.

In a four-sentence letter, Chatland said she called it quits because she doesn’t “like the direction things have been going for some time now. There are many other reasons, but I don’t have time to elaborate.”

She closed her letter by noting that she may consider running for a seat in the future.

Ms. Chatland could not be reached for comment.

Superintendent of Schools Jane Collins said the seat can’t be on the May ballot along with the 2013-2014 budget. The district has to wait 45 days between the resignation and the vote, should they choose that route. The board can also decide to appoint a new member or not fill the vacancy. She said after 90 days, the BOCES superintendent could make an appointment.

This is the second board seat vacated due to resignation in the last five months. Former board President Stacy Skidders resigned shortly before Christmas amid the public learning of her July arrest on cigarette smuggling charges in Canada.

The board decided to hold an election to replace her; Christopher Nye won the seat in a three-way race.

Prior to his election during a January special meeting, the board decided to make then Vice President Emily Lauzon the new president and named Judith Stark vice president. The move came after a roughly 90-minute executive session that was purported to discuss an unrelated matter, which was followed by no public discussion.
