Three local businesses receive Fit-Friendly designation

The American Heart Association has recognized three local businesses as being Fit-Friendly Worksites in 2013.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County, Credo Community Center for the Treatment of Addictions and Jefferson Community College have received the highest, or gold-level, status for promoting physical activity and health in the workplace.

Through such designations, the American Heart Association will work with employers on their health and wellness programs. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County also has been awarded a Worksite Innovation award “for creating a healthy vending machine system to provide workers with fruits, vegetables and other healthy options at a low cost,” according to an American Heart Association news release.

Attempts to reach extension nutrition educator Wanda L. Collins were unsuccessful, but Executive Director Kevin J. Jordan said in a news release that the agency is honored to be recognized by the American Heart Association.

“Physical activity and employee wellness are very important priorities here at Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Jefferson County and we encourage all of our employees to adopt healthy habits through eating healthy, locally sourced foods, being physically active on a daily basis, encouraging staff to use our healthy options vending machine and to participate in our wellness committee who actively encourage and educate staff on healthy habits,” he said, in the news release.

JCC’s award is a renewal from last year. In 2012, Stebbins Engineering & Manufacturing Co. also received the award.

According to the American Heart Association, more than 600 north country residents are working for companies that have received the Fit-Friendly designation.
