City sets a third waterfront meeting for May 2

Ogdensburg’s ongoing waterfront redevelopment plan is about more than condominiums, townhouses, shops, stores and marinas.

It’s also about culture, the arts, tourism, and leisure-time pursuits.

So it is that a “Rediscovering the Waterfront” workshop will be held on May 2 from 9 a.m. until noon at the Freight House Restaurant, 20 Market St.

The workshop will precede a pair of public meetings later in day at the Dobisky Visitors Center, 100 Riverside Ave. Both on the topic of waterfront development, they are a community open house from 3 to 5 p.m. and a community workshop from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

City Planning and Development Director Andrea L. Smith said Thursday that the workshop will bring together several special-interest organizations for an exchange of ideas about business strategies and promotions.

“It’s to have a conversation about what we have and how to make connections,” she said.

Those invited to attend the workshop include officials from Ogdensburg Command Performances, Pickens Hall in Heuvelton, Traditional Arts in Upstate New York, Canton, the Greater Ogdensburg Chamber of Commerce and Singer Castle, Hammond.

All three meetings will be hosted by Vita Nuova, the Connecticut-based consulting firm that is advising the city in administering a Brownfields Opportunity Area study on residential and commercial development along the shoreline between Park Street and the former Diamond International site off of Mansion Avenue.

Vita Nuova will deliver a report on its findings with recommendations to the City Council in June.
