The Ogdensburg Fire Department on Friday was awarded $28,612 from the Federal Emergency Management Agencys Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program for equipment purchases.
This could not have come at a better time, said Chief Michael J. Farrell. We need this.
Supplemented by a local 5 percent match of $1,500, the grant will used by the department to buy six sets of turnout gear - boots, coats, gloves, helmets and pants - 15 pagers to contact off-duty firefighters, three portable radios and a dispatching console.
Four of the turnout sets are replacements for sets that, according to federal firefighting standards, must be turned over every 10 years.
The other two sets, according to Mr. Farrell, have been set aside for newly hired firefighters in training Jason T. Bouchard and Patrick A. LeClair.
