Remington promotes Foster to Interm Director

Laura A. Foster was named Friday as interim executive director of the Frederic Remington Art Museum in Ogdensburg.

Ms. Foster, the museum’s curator since 1989, will lead the museum once current Executive Director Edward A. LaVarnway retires June 1.

Ms. Foster, 47, a native of Potsdam and a resident of Canton, will have interim status for six months with a $12,500 bump in her $44,250 annual salary and hold down both jobs. She will then be evaluated and is expected then to be named permanent executive director and curator.

“I’m sure that I’ll be able to do the jobs,” Ms. Foster said. “I have very high hopes.”

So does William M. Cavanaugh, president of the museum’s board of trustees.

“With the appointment of Laura, we are opening a new chapter in the life of this world-class museum,” he said Friday. “This is a very exciting time for the museum and for Ogdensburg. We wish Laura the very best and look forward to working with her. No one knows the museum better than Laura.”

Mr LaVarnway agreed.

“I was both thrilled and deeply satisfied that the museum’s trustees selected Laura Foster to succeed me as executive director,” he said. “Laura brings an unmatched knowledge of this institution and Frederic Remington to the job. As important, she is respected and loved by everyone in the Remington community. I know she will sustain and improve the museum’s mission in the finest traditions of its 90-year history.”’

Ms. Foster, one of 24 candidates for the job, is looking ahead to new double duty.

“I am very pleased to be moving into the interim executive director role,” she said. “This feels like a natural transition at this point in my career. Directing the museum while continuing my curatorial duties will be a big load, but I’m excited to take it on. With nearly 24 years as the museum’s curator, the move should be a smooth transition. look forward to working closely with the board and staff to accomplish much.

“ I look forward to renewing old connections and making new ones. I welcome wisdom and ideas from all of the museum’s friends.”
