Deferiet board seeks input about property maintenance law

DEFERIET — The village Board of Trustees has set a public hearing about a proposed property maintenance law.

The hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. May 1 in conjunction with the monthly meeting in the municipal building.

More than a year ago, trustees asked the Planning Board to create a property maintenance law, which it proposed Jan. 9. The proposed law met opposition because of concerns about snow removal and the requirement to put garbage in cans for village workers to pick up.

Planning Board members reworded the proposed law and added a section under littering.

The section specifies placing trash in a container will not be considered littering and using covered containers is required. The revised proposal allows composting or compost piles.
