Star Lake

Winners: Eric Szlamczynski, Star Lake, won the New York State Youth Snowmobiler of the Year Award at the New York Snowmobile Association’s annual meetingin April at Lake Placid.


Winners: Jefferson Community College, Watertown, held its annual Entrepreneurship Conference on April 19, with a business concept competition for high school students and announcement of winners for the concept competition for college students, held earlier in April.

High School Business Concept Competition

First place — Foreign Language Courses, by Tian Chen and Bermet T. Abaibekova, Watertown High School. The pair earned a $500 prize and one-year membership to the Greater Watertown North County Chamber of Commerce. The business concept specializes in education of more than seven foreign languages.

Second place — Shape it Up, by Abigail N. Lynch, Shannon L. Guler and Aaron S.W. Johnson, Indian River Central School, Philadelphia. The group earned a $250 prize on their business idea, built on the premise of personal training home delivery and site location.

Third place — HKH Health and Fitness Center, by Harleigh S. LeBarge, Kiana A. Coffey and Hanna Hansen, Edwards-Knox Central School, Edwards. The group earned a $125 prize on its business idea, offering the nuts and bolts of any fitness center with customized classes and physical training.

JCC Business Concept Competition

First place — Lake Effect Winery, by David W. Countryman, Watertown. He received a $1,000 prize and one-year membership to the Greater Watertown North Country Chamber of Commerce.

Second place — Whip-Poor-Will Designs, by Jaime L. Barton, Clayton, earning a $500 prize.

Third place — Castorland, by Karen A. Castor, Redfield, earning a $250 prize.

Heuvelton, Sackets Harbor

Delegates: Rachael Cougler, Heuvelton Central School, andKatheryn Lapusnak, Sackets Harbor Central School, will represent New York state as national youth delegates to the 2013 Washington Youth Summit, held June 23 to 28 at George Mason University, Washington, D.C.



Receives scholarship: Landon Laughlin, Massena, recently received a $2,175 Floyd and Eleanor Rose Endowed Scholarship to attend Alfred State College. Landon, a senior at Massena Central School, will major in building trades: building construction.

Honored: Raymond G. Krisciunas, history professor at SUNY Canton, will receive the 2013 Distinguished Faculty Award at the Nancy R. Auster Honors Convocation, held on campus on Wednesday. Mr. Krisciunas helped develop and present at the campus Liberal Arts Academic Film Festival and received a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute Award. At SUNY Canton, he served on the Faculty Affairs Committee, Liberal Arts Committee and Library Committee, and served as the department chairman for history, political science and economics and chairman for social sciences. Mr. Krisciunas received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in political science from the University of Connecticut, Storrs-Mansfield, Conn., a doctorate in history from Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind., and spent four years in a research position at the University of Kiel, Germany.

Honored: Samuel E. Scheu, Canton, received the American Society of Animal Science Award on April 19 from the University of Vermont, Burlington, Vt.


Honored: Spencer Crawford, Ogdensburg, was named a 2012-2013 Outstanding Undergraduate Scholar on April 11 at Rochester Institute of Technology. Mr. Crawford, son of Charles and Lynn Crawford, Ogdensburg, is a senior majoring in finance at RIT.
