Bastien steps down as St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center chief

OGDENSBURG — St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center Executive Director Samuel A. Bastien will retire later this summer.

Mr. Bastien said he has not yet set a date for his departure. He expects to remain in his post until mid-July. He has accepted an offer to become CEO of Four Winds Hospital, Saratoga, a private psychiatric hospital.

He said his departure has nothing to do with a potential state downsizing of inpatient psychiatric hospital beds.

“This was an unexpected change,” he said. “There will be changes to the state’s delivery of services, but I don’t have any foreknowledge of what those changes are going to be.”

Mr. Bastien had worked at the psychiatric center since 1986. He had been director since 2006.

State Office of Mental Health spokesman Benjamin Rosen said no decisions have yet been made about who will serve as acting director once Mr. Bastien leaves. He said OMH would not seek Mr. Bastien’s permanent replacement until he vacates the position later this summer.
