MASSENA - A routine traffic stop on Main Street Wednesday afternoon turned into two misdemeanor charges for a Norwood man.
Village police stopped Louis C. Nelson, 27, of 33 Park St., Norwood, in the Spankys parking lot following an incident that occurred at the pedestrian crossing in front of the Massena Town Hall.
Police said Nelson was forced to squeal his brakes to avoid rearending a village patrol vehicle stopped on Main Street to allow a pedestrian to cross the roadway. He was ticketed for following too closely and for having the drivers view obstructed.
He was additionally charged with obstruction of governmental administration, resisting arrest and a disorderly conduct violation.
Police said Nelson jumped out of his vehicle after stopping his vehicle and refused to comply with orders to get back in his car. Police said Nelson initially told them he needed to stretch his back but continued to refuse to get back into the vehicle after they gave him a period of time to remedy his back issue.
They said the Norwood man became combative when they told him they were going to handcuff him for officer safety, struggled with the village patrolmen and state trooper that were on the scene kicked officers before being subdued.
He was arraigned by Massena Village Justice Eric J. Gustafson and released on his own recognizance pending an appearance May 14 in village court. The village justice had initially set the return date for Tuesday but Nelson asked for the delay. He noted he is a student at SUNY Canton and has final examinations next week and has lived in the area since leaving the military in 2009.
He also told the village justice he had complaints about the conduct of the police officers that handled his case. These guys are real fine gentlemen, he told the court with no effort to hide his sarcasm.
Another defendant in the courtroom for Nelsons arraignment indicated that the Norwood mans behavior while in custody at the police station had been less than stellar in an unsolicited commentary offered at the conclusion of Nelsons arraignment.
