OFA Girls hold off heuvelton

Very early in Tuesday night’s home game with Heuvelton, the OFA Girls Lacrosse team took note that the best way to defend the Bulldogs’ relentless attacker Jackie Sovie was to possess the ball on offense.

The Devils used some outstanding possession- passing sequences in the second half to build an 11-7 lead on three straight goals by Mackenzie Bresett. But the Bulldogs managed a late comeback which the Devils withstood for a an 11-10 victory.

“We got the 11-7 lead and we tried to slow it down and they just overloaded our defense and put alot of pressure on us,” said OFA Coach Lauren Morley who will lead her team (3-3 NAC) to Canton on Thursday.

“This was an excellent team effort today and I am very pleased. We scored some beautiful goals today off excellent ball movement. But you have credit Heuvelton for their efforts and Jackie Sovie is so tough to contain. She is talented and she is very hungry and the Olivia and Maddie St. Pierre are very strong first-year players.”

Sovie tallied four goals and with one assist at the end of elusive open field runs. The Devils answered with a season’s best four goals and two assists from Nikki Holmes, three goals and two assists from Mackenzie Bresett, two goals from Kaitlin Sheppard, one goal and two assists from Carly Garrison, one goal from Sky Hoover and two assists from Mackenzie Comeau.

“Nikki Holmes did a great job recognizing when to shoot and when to pass tonight and Mackenzie Bresett just stepped up her game,” said Morley.

“Freshmen Danielle Guimond and Lexi Kennedy continue to make nice plays and give us quality minutes off the bench and Marissa Foster (10 saves) made some very nice saves.”

Johanna Carmany and Maddie St. Pierre scored twice for Heuvelton (1-5 NAC) with Olivia St. Pierre and Ashlyn Piercey adding single goals to back Heather Thompson’s 13-save effort.
