Special Olympics Torch travels Friday


The Special Olympics law enforcement torch will begin its journey at Ogdensburg City Hall at 7:30 a.m. Friday, travel more than 30 miles down Route 37 and end at the Massena Town Hall at 1:30 p.m.

State police, Ogdensburg Correctional Facility, Riverview Correctional Facility, the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, Ogdensburg Police Department, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Massena Police Department and the Potsdam Police Department will participate in this year’s run.

Sponsoring businesses include the St. Lawrence Federal Credit Union, Walmart, Elks lodges in Potsdam and Massena, Pepsi-Cola Ogdensburg Bottlers, Phillips Diner, Busy Corner Cafe and Tanning, Jreck Subs, Oak & More, AJ Septic, Wayside Tavern, Gary’s Auto and Gary & Aileen’s Hairstyling. Each of the businesses will be listed on a T-shirt which is available for a $20 donation.

Special Olympics New York has more than 51,000 athletes across the state compete and train in 22 Olympic-style sports throughout the year.

The Special Olympics New York-North Country Region spring games are Saturday at SUNY Canton. The opening ceremonies begin at 9:45 a.m. at the Convocation Athletic and Recreation Center, nicknamed Roos House.

Approximately 175 athletes are expected to participate in track and field races and basketball games. Event organizers estimate more than 150 volunteers will be assisting with the competitions.

Special Olympics New York – North Country Region serves about 300 athletes from both St. Lawrence and Franklin counties through more than 20 training programs.
