‘Be the Match’ bone marrow drive deemed a success

LOWVILLE — Last week’s “Be the Match” bone marrow drive drew nearly double the number of potential donors organizers had hoped for, as well as an additional $5,000 in donations.

Be the Match is a nonprofit donor registry that matches volunteers with patients needing a bone marrow transplant. Along with maintaining a database of donors, the organization pays all of the medical and travel expenses for a donor who is matched to save the life of a transplant patient.

Approximately 90 people who attended the drive filled out a short medical survey and conducted a cheek swab. In about four to six weeks, their names will be added to the potential donors list to match them with those in need of a transplant.

“They could be donating around the world,” said Michael J. Garbin, senior account executive for Upstate New York Be the Match, as the organization matches donors and recipients internationally.

An average marrow drive usually recruits about 50 donors, Mr. Garbin said. He said Lewis County’s numbers were “fantastic. It speaks volumes for the community.”

Many residents who were not able to participate in the drive, such as those over the age of 44 or with medical histories that excluded them, donated money instead.

Many participants gave donations and signed up on the donor list.
