REDWOOD, NY – Robert J. “Rod” Thornton, 82, of 28635 Pine St., died early Wednesday morning at Carthage Area Hospital SNF, where he had been a patient since December.

Rod was born February 18, 1931 in Theresa, NY, son of Merrill and Lula Countryman Thornton. He graduated from Theresa High School in 1949. He was a code enforcement officer for several municipalities including the Town and Village of Theresa, the Villages of Philadelphia, Evans Mills, and Hammond, and the Town of Rossie. He was a member of the Theresa Rotary Club, the Theresa Volunteer Fire Department, the Thousand Islands Blue Grass Association, the Jefferson County Planning Board, and was past president of the Jeff/Lewis Code Enforcement Association.

He is survived by his wife Carol, three sons, Steven and wife, Barbara Thornton, Richard and Timothy Thornton, two stepsons and their wives, Robert and Brenda Busler, and Timothy and Kelly Busler, 7 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Chris Thornton, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Everett “Red” Thornton and a sister Isabel Furney.

Calling hours will be held Saturday, May 4th, from 2-4 pm at the Costello Funeral Home, Alexandria Bay. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Theresa, at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donation may be made to the River Hospital Foundation or the Redwood Rescue Squad.
