Vallance honored as grand marshall

CANTON - Dale Vallance of Madrid, who racked up back-to-back wins in the St. Lawrence International Junior Carp Tournament several years ago, has been named Grand Marshal of this year’s event. The catch-and-release tournament hosted by the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce takes place August 15 – 17, along a 30-mile stretch of the St. Lawrence River from Ogdensburg to Massena.

Vallance, now 20, knows well the river hot spots for carp fishing. In two consecutive years – 2009 and 2010 – he was named Grand Champion of the tournament, each year pulling in top fish that in total weighed more than 90 pounds.

The first win, he remembered, was “really intense… I caught the winning fish two minutes before time was up.”

The son of Teresa and Dave Pryce of Madrid is a graduate of Madrid-Waddington Central School. Vallance is currently enrolled in the criminal justice program at SUNY Canton, and is considering a major in Homeland Security. His future could be as a U.S. Border Patrol or Customs agent, or he could go into state law enforcement.

Meanwhile, he still fishes for carp – citing corn with “special sauce” as favorite bait.

The nation’s largest junior carp fishing contest is for boys and girls ages 11 to 18. Entry fees remain the same as last year: $100 if registration is received by July 15 or $125 after that date. Contestants can register to fish individually, with a friend or as part of a four-person team.

Registration covers participation in all tournament-related events during the three days, including a pre-tournament fishing school sponsored by Mort Backus & Sons. All carp caught during the tournament are returned live to the St. Lawrence River.

For more information or to download a registration form, go to the county chamber’s call the chamber at 315-386-4000.

Sponsors and volunteers are needed for the event, too; for more information call or email the chamber at
