MASSENA - The Greater Massena Chamber of Commerce will play host for a concert to raise money for the Massena Neighborhood Center.

The “Re-Stock” Concert will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the chamber offices, 16 Church St., Massena. The entry fee is $10 or a donation of non-perishable food items.

Chamber Executive Director Michael J. Gleason said he was approached by Jerry Manor and Rick Bates, who had been involved in the former “Blues for Books” effort.

“Blues for Books” was a fundraiser event for First Book of St. Lawrence County. It featured a series of shows by The Conrad Story Blues Band, of which Mr. Bates was a member, at venues throughout St. Lawrence County.

“We got a call a few months ago. They wanted to do a fundraiser for the Neighborhood Center. Jerry Manor and Rick Bates were involved with ‘Blues for Books’ and they started a benefit concert to re-stock Neighborhood Center shelves,” Mr. Gleason said.

“They do one at each town. It’s kind of like the setup they did for ‘Blues for Books,’” he said.

The concert will feature music by Mr. Bates, aka Tas Cru, and Mary Ann Casale, along with special guests.

It will serve not only as a fundraiser, but also as an opportunity to test the acoustics at the chamber’s offices, according to Mr. Gleason. One portion of the building, formerly the Adath Israel synagogue, holds office space, while the church side will be used for concerts like the one on Friday. It will serve as a back-up venue in case of rain during the chamber’s upcoming “Concerts In the Park” series.

They’ve already used the space for two concerts, Mr. Gleason said - one that was held during their grand opening and another by Ben Todd from Six Foot Midget.

Mr. Bates is a blues artists and songwriter. His latest album, “Tired of Bluesmen Cryin’,” has reached the international and national root music charts.

Ms. Casale is a singer-songwriter who was influenced by the New York City folks scene in the mid-1970’s.

Both performers will also be appearing during this year’s “Concerts In the Park” at Springs Park.
