Congress lacks common sense

Sequester seemed like such a bad idea, to have across the board cuts in funding without thought to particular need. However, it passed. And with it, loss of funds resulting in teacher layoffs, larger class sizes, less early childhood care, social programs hurting, cuts in air traffic control and forced furlough days.

Then, lo and behold, Congress switched funds around to enable air traffic controllers to come back and planes to be on time. Now, I am certainly not against safe air travel, but how elitist is that decision? Who flies on planes? Members of Congress and those who can afford it.

The other above mentioned subjects, education and social programs among others, apparently do not have the lobbyists and money to exert as strong a voice and lose funds.

Our government could save money in many common-sense ways such as closing loopholes, raising the retirement age for Social Security and refusing to fund outdated Army equipment.

We need to elect a Congress with common sense. And, by the way, if members of Congress vote to furlough workers, they should set an example and cut their salaries.
