FORT COVINGTON — The academic leaders for the class of 2013 at Salmon River Central School are Samantha Monette, valedictorian, and Kaitlyn Pickering, salutatorian.

Miss Monette is the daughter of Shawn and Janet Monette, South Bombay. She has taken several advanced courses, including honors algebra/trigonometry, AP history, honors English, AP English, AP chemistry, honors government, calculus and physics. She is a member of National Honor Society and received the University of Rochester’s Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award, Clarkson College Challenge Award and 4-H Honor Award for Leadership.

On Saturday mornings, she has taken classes at local colleges, including at St. Lawrence University, Canton, and Clarkson University, Potsdam. For two summers, Miss Monette attended a camp for advanced students in math and science at Clarkson.

She plays drums in the school band, performed at the New York State School Music Association competition and served the community through 4-H, Meals on Wheels, the food pantry, Mu Alpha Theta and several area fundraising activities.

Miss Monette will pursue a doctor of pharmacy degree through Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

Miss Pickering is the daughter of Preston and Bonnie Pickering, Westville. She has taken several advanced courses, including AP history, honors algebra/trigonometry/geometry, AP English, honors government and physics. She is a member of National Honor Society, where she serves as secretary, is on the yearbook staff, prom committee and 4-H.

She plays on the varsity volleyball team, sings in the high school chorus and has participated in the New York State School Music Association competition. She volunteers in Westville on cleanup days, planting flowers at Coville Bay and singing Christmas carols. Miss Pickering cleans kennels at a local animal shelter, served as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army and is a waitress to raise money for people in need.

She will pursue a doctorate in physical therapy at Nazareth College, Rochester.
