CANTON - After months of wrangling, the Canton Town Board will consider adopting two new zoning laws Monday that would expand allowed uses in the town’s residential zones.

Public hearings will be held on the two laws following the town board’s regular 4 p.m. meeting in the municipal building, 60 Main St.

The first hearing is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and will allow residents to voice input on proposed Local Law No. 2. The law would allow property owners in the town’s residential zones to raise chickens providing they have a minimum of 3 acres.

The second hearing is scheduled to start at 5:45 p.m. and addresses proposed Local Law No. 3. That law would allow community supported agriculture projects, such as community gardens, in the town’s residential zones.

Town Supervisor David T. Button said about 240 postcards about the public hearings were mailed to impacted property owners.

He said he’s hopeful the board will vote on the proposed zoning changes.

“I’d like to see us go ahead and take some action so there is more clarity for what’s allowed,” Mr. Button said.

The regular board meeting will be held in the board room. The public hearings will be moved to the municipal building’s basement where more seating is provided.
