Potsdam lacrosse teams sweep mixed twinbill; Massena girls reach SJ Tourney final


POTSDAM - The Potsdam Central varsity boys and girls lacrosse teams netted back-to-back wins on their home turf on Friday.

Potsdam12, Northwood Prep 6: In a non-league matchup that opened the double-header, the Sandstoners steadily worked their way to a 10-2 lead through the first three quarters as Stephen Lewis led a balanced attack with four goals and an assist. Chris Stone netted a pair of goals. Kyle Grant, Sam Woods and Dylan Gruneisen each finished with a goal and assist. Garrett Kilgore, David Murray and Josh Laing connected for the other Potsdam goals. Cody Compeau and Hayden Hart both drew a pair of assists and netminder Jason Cardinal turned aside 12 shots backstopping the win.

The Sandstoners (7-6, 6-5) close out a busy week of four games in five days this morning with an NAC matchup at home against Massena that is slated to face-off at 10:30 a.m.

Potsdam 13, Heuvelton 3: In the nightcap, the Lady Sandstoners made a strong recovery from their first NAC loss of the season by pulling away from the Lady Bulldogs.

Katie Lashomb, Maddie St. Pierre and Jackie Sovie connected for the Heuvelton goals.


In other varsity girls lacrosse matchups on Friday, Massena Central rallied for an 11-10 non-league win over Central Square in the first round of the South Jefferson Tournament, Canton outscore Salmon River 20-12 and OFA played at Northwood Prep.

Massena 11, Central Square 10: In Adams, the Lady Raiders fell behind 6-4 by halftime before senior Alisha Jacobs connected for a textbook transition goal with just 10 seconds left in regulation to lift Massena into the tournament final.

“Central Square had the ball in front of our goal with 35 seconds left but we did a good job of checking the ball away. Dominique Valancius got possession of it and passed it up to Erin Francis who ran up the field then gave it over to Alisha and she shot it into the net for a really pretty goal,” noted coach Jeffrey Slack after his squad improved to 10-2 overall. “This was a very nice win for us.”

Jacobs finished with five goals and an assist while Francis tallied two goals and two helpers. Carlie Leary chipped in two goals and an assist. Valancius (1 assist) and Shannon Casey had the other Massena goals.

Hunter Waldau paced Central Square with three goals while Rachel Fisher and Christie Gilbert each netted a pair.

Annalee Beckstead (1 save) and Felicity Love (4 saves) shared crease duties in the win while Morgan Colburn turned aside four shots in the losing cause.

The Lady Raiders will now get set to take on the winner of the other first round matchup between South Jeff and Manlius-Pebble Hill this morning starting at 11:30 a.m.

Canton 20, Salmon River 12: At Roger Dusharm Field in Canton, the Lady Bears pulled away from a 8-7 halftime lead against Salmon River as Rachel Huntley exploded for seven goals and three assists, Kali Frank generated three goals and two assists and Katie Lapinski scored two goals and posted three assists and Tessa Knight delivered three goals.

Claire Bartlett, Mary Kate Mace, Alison Noble and Emily Pinckney all scored once as Morgan Eggleston stepped in goal for her first start and made 10 saves.

Kyra Thompson scored four goals for Salmon River. Inea Thompson and Tewasherake Barnes each netted three while Kiera Pyke made 11 saves.
