Brasher Falls – Irene E. Oakes, 50, passed away peacefully May 9, 2013 at Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington, VT. Arrangements are entrusted with the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.

Irene was born on December 12, 1962 in Massena, daughter of James Crump and the late Elizabeth (LaMora) Crump. She graduated from St. Lawrence Central School and then from Canton ATC with a degree in Data Processing. On October 20, 1984, she married Michael C. Oakes at St. Patrick Church in Brasher Falls with Rev. Robert Lamitie celebrating. They shared a special bond and devotion for each other that truly was a match made in heaven. For several years, Irene worked at Key Bank in Winthrop and was presently a Customer Representative at the W. B. Goodnow Insurance Agency in Winthrop.

She was a communicant of St. Patrick Church in Brasher Falls and a member of the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, Council #2176 in Brasher Falls.

Irene loved life; always with a smile, polite and considerate of others. She was a good listener with a kind heart and good soul. She loved her job, and was gentle and graceful when interacting with people. Her deep faith guided her through life and it was unknowingly passed to those she met. At home, Irene’s devotion revolved around her love and concern for her husband and children and was most content when in the company of her family.

She is survived by her husband, Michael; three children, Samantha, Kimberly and Matthew all of Brasher Falls; her father, James Crump of Winthrop; one brother, William and Shirley Crump of Winthrop; two sisters, Pamela Rookey of Madrid and Darlene and Robert Wood of Winthrop.

Visitation will be held Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm at the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. Irene’s Celebration of Life and Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday at 10 am at St. Patrick Church in Brasher Falls. Burial will follow at the parish cemetery.

Those wishing to express an act of kindness in Irene’s memory please consider donations to Autism Speaks, 1060 State Road, 2nd Floor, Princeton, NJ 08540.
