Final belt sander drag race scheduled for today at Duff’s

The final qualifying race for the first ever Ogdensburg belt sander drag race tournament is being held today at Duff’s Bar at 935 Ford St. Registration begins at 4 p.m. and the races will get underway at 5.

The tournament is sponsored by the Wounded Warrior Outdoor Adventures organization as a fundraiser to help the group take veterans hiking, fishing, hunting and on other outdoor trips. The cost to participate in the race on Saturday is $20.

Robert Giordano, chairman of the Wounded Warriors, said the tournament has been successful so far.

“All the guys who tried it had a lot of fun doing it,” Mr. Giordano said. “It really took off quick.”

If you’re feeling out of the loop, don’t worry; belt sander drag racing isn’t exactly the world’s most popular sport, but it’s getting a warm reception in the north country thanks to the Wounded Warriors.

As the name suggests, belt sander drag racing consists of sending modified belt sanders flying down a race track to see which one is faster.

On Friday the Ogdensburg Lowes invited some of the racers over to demonstrate their skills (and Skils) on the track.

James F. Snyder, assistant store manager, said it’s a great way to showcase the abilities of the belt sanders while helping advertise the Wounded Warriors tournament.

Lowes has also donated an outdoor patio set to the Wounded Warriors to give away as a prize at this year’s championship race.

“At least three or four sanders [in the tournament] were bought from Lowes,” Mr. Giordano said, adding that the partnership seems obvious.

In addition to the event at Lowes, Mr. Giordano said the Wounded Warriors plan on hosting races during the Bassmaster Elite Series event in Waddington. That fishing tournament will be running from August 8 to 11.

The organizers said “they needed something redneck” to showcase, Mr. Giordano said. “So the belt sanders will be down there.”

Today’s race at Duff’s will be the final race before the Wounded Warrior championship. That race is scheduled for June 2 at The Pub. Registration is a noon and the race is at 1.

Anyone who placed in first, second or third place during any of the qualifying matches will get to race in the championship.

Questions about the tournament should be directed to Mr. Giordano at 600-7533.
