Edward E. Brown, director of the Jefferson County Probation Department, is scheduled to give a presentation to members of the Board of Legislators General Services Committee about a proposal to arm some of the countys 30 probation officers.
The idea was introduced in an October meeting and met with favorable reception from many legislators.
Of New Yorks 57 counties outside the city of New York, 31 arm their probation officers, Mr. Brown said at the meeting. An informal poll taken at the time indicated that 22 of the countys 30 officers would be interested in carrying weapons while checking on convicted criminals to make sure theyre obeying the law.
The committee will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Board of Legislators chambers, 195 Arsenal St.
