Syracuse women cruise past Dartmouth

SYRACUSE — Alyssa Murray tied her career high with 10 points, including five goals, to lead the fourth-seeded Syracuse women’s lacrosse team past Dartmouth, 21-8, in the second round of the NCAA Division I tournament at the SU Soccer Stadium.

Kayla Treanor also tallied five goals and former Carthage standout Kailah Kempney notched a pair of goals for the Orange (17-3), which hosts No. 5 Florida at 2 p.m. Saturday in a rematch of last year’s national semifinal game. Syracuse won 14-13 in double overtime in that game. The Gators beat the Orange, 14-10, on March 2 in Gainesville, Fla.

Sarah Byrne paced Dartmouth (11-8) with four goals.

NORTHWESTERN 15, STANFORD 8

Taylor Thornton, Ali Cassera and Alyssa Leonard each scored three times as the second-seeded Wildcats beat the Cardinal in the second round at Evanston, Ill.

Bridget Bianco stopped eight shots for Northwestern (17-2), which features former Carthage star Kat DeRonda. The Wildcats will face No. 7 Penn State at a time and date yet to be determined.

Julia Burns supplied a hat trick for Stanford (14-5).

PENN STATE 19, MASSACHUSETTS 9

Maggie McCormick led the No. 7 Nittany Lions with four goals as they beat the Minutewomen in a second round game in University Park, Pa.

Kelly Lechner added three goals for Penn State (13-6).

Former Carthage players Amy Tiernan and Katie Ferris each scored a goal for Massachusetts (18-2).
