BOMBAY - Property owners in Bombay may have some new regulations to comply with in the near future.
Code enforcement officer Peter Ghostlaw told the town council he will be asking them to vote on two new regulations, one which will make all rental property owners register with the code office and another to establish a 10-foot setback for all new construction from property boundaries.
Mr. Ghostlaw said the registry would make it easier to keep track of state-mandated inspections that all rental properties must pass.
Once theyre rental properties, they have to be inspected for the safety and security of the people living in it and the safety of the people who own it, he noted at last weeks town board meeting.
Mr. Ghostlaw noted that he doesnt yet know how exactly he will execute the plan.
I will set up office hours if I have to ... thats not an issue, he said.
While explaining the rationale behind the 10-foot setback proposal, Mr. Ghostlaw noted there is no setback under the current local code. He said a property owner can build on the property line but is required to maintain both sides of the structure. He said the new setback would have a property owner working on their own land when maintaining the neighbors side. Mr. Ghostlaw also noted the 10 feet would apply to the distance to the boundary from an overhang rather than a wall.
Councilman Phil Reardon was concerned how the new setback would affect farmers; Mr. Ghostlaw noted that his jurisdiction is residential, not agricultural.
The board took no official action on either matter.
In other news, the town council unanimously approved spending $10,724.97 of casino compact money to buy materials to pave part of the municipal buildings parking lot.
The town has $280,267 left in its compact fund, according to officials.
