Cape Vincent town supervisor changes his mind, decides to run for reelection

CAPE VINCENT — Town Supervisor Urban C. Hirschey will run for re-election after all.

Mr. Hirschey said Monday that he has changed his mind, partly because Councilmen Brooks J. Bragdon and Clifford P. Schneider were poised to square off in the Republican primary for the top position and likely would have split the vote.

“That’s one reason. I would feel very bad if I didn’t run and things didn’t go well,” he said.

In March, the supervisor said he wished to step back and spend more time with his family and perhaps travel more.

Mr. Hirschey, who was first elected to office in November 2009, said he wants to continue helping the community further realize its untapped potential as the town’s supervisor.

The Town Council has been putting a lot of time and effort into researching and responding to BP’s 124-turbine wind farm proposal. But Mr. Hirschey said he would like to spend more time facilitating community development.

“If the wind issue gets resolved, we’d be able to spend more time on community development. And I would like to support that,” Mr. Hirschey said.

The wind developer is expected to file its project application for a state Article X siting review this summer.

Councilman Bragdon threw his support behind Mr. Hirschey’s candidacy, and Councilman Schneider said he “couldn’t be more pleased” that Mr. Hirschey is running for re-election.

“He’s just a wonderful person to work with,” Mr. Bragdon said.
