ELLISBURG A dream 30 years in the making has come together like a handmade tapestry for Diane J. Lake, as she opened the Old Creamery Fabrics & Quilting store in the village.
Mrs. Lake said she had wanted to open the store, at 12022 Route 193, since she moved down the street in 1983.
It opened in mid-April, with a grand opening scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
The former cheese-processing building and convenience store property was empty for decades and its ownership shifted from past owners to banks, then to Jefferson County. It was kind of frustrating, Mrs. Lake said.
Finally, in December 2011, she purchased the property in a sealed bid from the village, which had assumed control of the property. She and her husband, Gregory B., spent the next year making extensive repairs to its interior and exterior.
To stress how much work the building needed, Mr. Lake pointed to a wall at a corner near the stores entrance. That was not here, he said.
The Lakes filled six dumpsters with trashed materials left behind by past owners. Asked how much they spent to make the repairs, Mrs. Lake replied only, Too much.
You couldnt stop in the middle, she said. She said she remembers hearing friends initially joke that she should have burned it down.
Now they come in and are telling us, Were glad you didnt burn it, Mrs. Lake said.
With the building fixed, she stocked the store with inventory purchased from KAP Quilting, LaFargeville, whose owner has retired. On Friday, the stores shelves were neatly lined with spools, threads, flat folds, bolts and fat corners of various colors, patterns and brands.
Since opening, Mrs. Lake said, she has seen several customers make repeat trips, often bringing friends with them.
She said she was excited to work at the store with her daughter Anna R. Blount and her mother, Shirley L. Lasell.
Its just super its come together. ... its a fabric store, Mrs. Lake said, looking at Mrs. Blount. Youve been waiting a long time for this.
Youve been waiting even longer, Mrs. Blount said.
The store is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. More information can be found by calling its desk at 756-4005, or online at www.facebook.com/pages/The-Old-Creamery-Fabrics-Quilting/507758852615733.
