Verizon Wireless will have a second franchise-owned store in Ogdensburg this summer.
Construction has just begun on a 2,500-square-foot store that will face the north side of Route 37 just east of Route 68. It will open in July.
Meanwhile, the Verizon Wireless store that has been in nearby Seaway Plaza on Canton Street in the town of Oswegatchie for the last eight years will relocate next month to the Parkway Travel Center on Route 37, one mile east of where the new store is going up.
Owner Todd J. Bender said Monday that the decision to move was prompted by desire for a better location and not the new store.
To be more visible in the community, he said.
Mr. Bender, who is based in Batavia and owns 12 other Verizon Wireless stores in New York, declined to comment on whether he felt the new store would undercut his or be unfair competition.
Luke Fletcher, the New York regional director for the new stores franchisee, Cellular Sales, Knoxville, Tenn., dismissed any suggestion of one store hurting the other.
As in all of our new locations we are approved through Verizon Wireless corporate for the site, Mr. Fletcher said via email. Verizon is of the opinion that more distribution is needed in the Ogdensburg area for Verizon Wireless customers.
Verizon Wireless corporate officials in New York City were unavailable for comment.
Mr. Fletcher said the new store will employ between 10 and 12 workers.
Mr. Bender employs from five to six workers at his store. His other stores are in Malone, Potsdam, Saranac Lake, Evans Mills, Lowville, Pulaski, Oswego, Rochester, Dansville, Hornell and Painted Post.
