A pair of combined pitching efforts helped carry the Massena Central and Norwood-Norfolk varsity baseball teams to wins over NAC rivals on Tuesday.
Massena 7, Gouverneur 1: At Harry Mills Park, the visiting Raiders scored five runs over their final two at-bats to come away with a Central Division win over the Wildcats.
Rory Corcoran went the first five innings to earn the win before Joey LaBelle came on to provide two innings of hitless relief. Corcoran finished with nine strikeouts and four walks while allowing only three hits. LaBelle had two strikeouts and one walk.
Cody Woods (8K, 4BB) went the distance in taking the loss.
The Wildcats took the early lead with a solo run in their first at-bat where Matt Waugh singled and eventually scored on a delayed steal when a teammate was caught in a rundown between first and secondbase. Waugh finished with two singles while Matt Ashley had the lone other Gouverneur hit.
The Raiders were led offensively by Zack Rusaw who went 2-3 with three runs scored an a solo homerun that tied the game in the second inning. LaBelle delivered a two-run single in the sixth inning that pushed the Massena lead to 4-1. Isaiah Dillabough and Patrick Manning both went 1-4 with two runs scored.
The Raiders are slated to host Salmon River on Friday.
N-N 4, Brushton-Moira 2: In a well-played East Division matchup of Class C rivals at Vern Burrows Field, the Flyers built an early lead then sealed the win with a solo run in the fifth inning.
Cody Smith took over for starter Troy Kovach in the fourth inning and picked up the win in relief, striking out seven, walking none and scattering three hits while allowing one run after Kovach had fanned four, walked none and scattered three hits through the first three frames. Adam Martin lasted into the fifth inning in taking the loss. He fanned two and gave up six hits before giving way to Zach Burnett with one out in the fifth.
Chris Prashaw had two hits, including a two-run single in the second inning, to highlight the Flyer offense. Tristan Harvey drove in the insurance run with an RBI-double in the fifth. Cody Rust singled and drove in a pair of runs, including the eventual game-winner on a sacrifice fly in the third. Kovach and Zeb Brown had the other Flyer hits.
Martin rapped two singles in the losing cause. Burnett, Bob Hooker, Phil Jesner and Jacob St. Mary had the other hits for the Panthers.
The Flyers are slated to play at Madrid-Waddington on Thursday starting at 3:30 p.m.
In other NAC East baseball on Tuesday, Madrid-Waddington downed Parishville-Hopkinton 10-3 and Chateaugay swept a pair from St. Regis Falls 6-5, 10-7. West Division games saw Heuvelton overpower Clifton-Fine 267-3 and Harrisville beat Edwards-Knox 13-8.
M-W 10, P-H 3: Two runs in the third, fourth and fifth inning answered a pair of Panthers runs in the top of the third for as Zach Brock went the distance striking out 10 and allowing two walks and six hits.
Greg Thompson supplied a two run triple and scored three times for M-W. Jacob Barney lined two singles and plated two runs while Mike Thew, Brock, Tanner Uppstrom, Jim Miller, Eric Squires and Noah Blair all singled.
Wyatt Snell took the loss striking out three batters, allowing five walks and nine hits. Tanner Wilson connected for two singles while Snell, Preston Frank, Mike Burns and Anthony Pullano all singled once.
Chateaugay 6-10, SRF 5-7:Zach Cowan produced two hits in each game as the Bulldogs (4-6) swept an East Division doubleheader against St. Regis Falls in Chateaugay.
Nick Ashline struck out 10 for the Bulldogs in the opener. Corey Hill lined two doubles and singled in game two.
Louis Goodrow went 3-for-3 for St. Regis Falls (1-12) in the opener and Ryan Duquette hit a three-run homer in game two.
