Massena girls clinch share of 2013 NAC lacrosse banner


SARANAC LAKE - The Massena Central varsity girls lacrosse team clinched at least a share of a third straight NAC regular season title on Wednesday after pulling away to a 22-5 win on the road over Saranac Lake.

Erin Francis generated six goals and four assists as the Lady Raiders built a commanding 15-3 lead by halftime. Alisha Jacobs also tallied six goals to go along with a solo helper. Dominique Valancius (1 assist), Shannon Casey and Molly O’Connell connected for two goals each while Sophia Rusaw (1 assist), Megan Hans, Steffanie Premo and Carley Leary all broke through for singletons. Alanna Pyke contributed a pair of assists toward the win.

Kaliegh Woodruff scored twice in the losing cause. Rita Munn, Marissa McDonough and Bridget Sulman struck for the other goals.

The duo of Felicity Love (4 saves) and Annalee Beckstead (3 saves) shared crease duties in the winning effort while Katie Snyder (6 saves) and Sheila Decker (1 save) combined to work the Red Storm crease.

With the win, the Lady Raiders improved to 10-1 heading into it regular season finale on Friday at home against Heuvelton where they clinch the 2013 NAC banner for themselves with a win.

“We’ve been playing well. Once we get going, we’ve been able to score a lot of goals and we’ve been play well defensively,” noted coach Jeffrey Slack.

In the other NAC girls lacrosse matchups staged on Wednesday, OFA outscored Salmon River 19-12 and Canton edged Heuvelton 14-13.

OFA 19, Salmon River 12: In Fort Covington, Kaitlin Sheppard finished with four goals and six assists while Mackenzie Bresett collected three goals and three assists and Mackenzie Comeau tallied three goals as the Lady Blue Devils pulled away from a 10-8 halftime lead. Nikki Holmes, Danielle Guimond (1 assist), Sky Hoover and Nicole Hammond each scored twice to back Marissa Foster’s seven saves in goal.

Krya Thompson scored five goals for the Shamrocks (0-11) and Tewashorake Barnes and Victoria Thompson each netted three while Kiera Pyke turned aside nine shots working the Salmon River crease.
