Potsdam Humane Society seeks new director

POTSDAM — The search is on for a new executive director at the Potsdam Humane Society.

Anne M. Smith, the outgoing director, announced her resignation last month. Her last day was May 9. She could not be reached for comment.

“We’re doing a search right now,” Humane Society board President Carrie M. Tuttle said.

The remaining staff members, three veterinary technicians and an office manager, have been running the shelter themselves during the search.

“Those staff positions are picking up the slack in the meantime,” Ms. Tuttle said.

Whomever is chosen will have to juggle the challenges of managing the 1,000 animals that come into the shelter every year, the staff and volunteers who work for the Humane Society and the constant struggle of raising enough funds to keep the shelter afloat.

Almost 45 percent of the shelter’s revenue comes from donations. The rest comes from towns and villages that hire the agency for animal control along with various fees and grants.

“It’s a tough position. There’s a lot that goes with it,” Ms. Tuttle said.

The society posted an advertisement seeking a new director in April on its website.

So far 25 people have applied for the job.

“We’ve had a really good response,” Ms. Tuttle said.

About half are local, but some applicants are from far-flung states such as California and Alaska.

While everyone’s qualifications are being considered, local candidates are preferred, according to Ms. Tuttle.

“If we can find someone local who understands the communities, that’s certainly an advantage for us,” she said.

The 25 applicants have been whittled down to a short list of six by the volunteers on the Potsdam Humane Society board. The board will interview these six by the end of the month and is expected to make its choice soon after.
