Local auto racing: Raabe takes Mohawk opener


Chris Raabe held off Watertown’s Billy Dunn, the defending small-block modified points champion, on Friday night en route to victory as the Mohawk International Raceway at Akwesasne opened its 2013 season.

Raabe, the 2011 champion, navigated through traffic ahead of Dunn and third-place finisher Joel Doiron.

Dylan Evoy won his 19th career sportsman race at the raceway, placing ahead Darryl Nutting and Corey Wheeler. Rock Aubin posted his first pro stock feature at the track, whiler Stephane LeBrun took second place and Dan Desnoyers was third.

Scott Waldorff, last year’s rookie of the year at the raceway, won the mod lite feature ahead of Joel Hargrave and Dan Reif. Jean-Marc Larose won the bandit feature, with runner-up Hargrave finishing only a car length behind. Darryl Mitchell took third.

n Marcel Pecore took the lead with two laps to go and hung on to win the sportsman feature Friday night at Can-Am Motorsports Park in LaFargeville. Jessica Power took second and Michael Prentice finished third.

Ken Hartsborn led the field across the finish line in the pro street feature. David Rogers finished second and Sid Harmer third.

Al Kingsley finally caught and passed Sean Beardsley with five laps to go to win the 20-lap late model feature. Ken Rogers finished third. Ray Bechler held off challengers Matt Zira and Shane Ray to take the 15-lap thunder cars feature. Jordan Miler won the 15-lap novice sportsman race.

n Dexter native Robbie Bellinger used his driving skills along with a little luck — specifically a first-lap crash that took out top competitors — to win the big-block modified feature Friday night at Brewerton Speedway. Matt Sheppard finished second and Pat Ward was a distant third.
