Eng named director of SLU EMS for 2013-14

CANTON - Daniel Eng, a junior at St. Lawrence University, has been elected to be the director of SLU EMS for 2013-2014 academic year. He is a certified emergency medical technician and worked this past year on the St. Lawrence campus as well as running a duty crew for the Potsdam Rescue Squad.

St. Lawrence University Emergency Medical Services (SLU EMS) is a student-run and New York state certified EMS agency. They provide Basic Life Support (BLS) First Response services to the St. Lawrence University campus and surrounding area. As an affiliate of the St. Lawrence University Safety and Security Department, SLU EMS is composed of 25 members, all of whom are undergraduate students at St. Lawrence and have gone through a hiring process in order to ensure the integrity of our organization. In addition to providing coverage to the campus 24-hours a day during the academic year; SLU EMS also provides standby services at campus events. SLU EMS completes its mission by providing public education through a variety of outlets.

The director of SLU EMS serves a number of important roles. As the public information officer for SLU EMS, the director is responsible for interacting with the New York state Department of Health, state and local oversight bodies, the university administration and the Safety and Security Department. The director also works with other local EMS agencies, such as Canton and Potsdam Rescue, to ensure the best possible service is delivered to the patients.

Daniel has many qualifications for this position. As well as being a full-time college student and a certified emergency medical technician, he has earned several other medical certifications this past year. One of which is the Basic Life Support instructor certification. He created a new fundraising program on the SLU campus in which he, with the help of other EMS staff, teach CPR/First Aid to students and faculty in return for donations toward the SLU Emergency Medical Services program.

Daniel is a pre-med major at St. Lawrence University and after graduation wants to continue his education at Clarkson University in the physicians assistants program. Daniel graduated from Norwood-Norfolk School and is the son of Theresa Eng of Norwood.
