Massena Counry Club dedicates clubhouse to Dr. Allen, Joan Welch

MASSENA - A plaque will soon be placed at the clubhouse at the Massena Country Club in honor of a local man and his wife who board of directors members said made many contributions to the golf course and facility improvements.

Dr. Allen and Joan Welch were recognized by the Massena Country Club’s Board of Directors during a ceremony Sunday afternoon “in honor of their many years of dedicated friendship, support and generosity.

“On behalf of the membership and the board of directors, we want to thank Al and Joan,” President Don Wood told family and friends of the Welch’s who filled the dining room at the clubhouse to take part in the event.

“I think it speaks volumes of what you’ve done, you and Joan,” said Tom Post, their grandson, who presented them with a framed copy of the plaque that will be placed outside the clubhouse to recognize their efforts.

“It’s hard to find two more dedicated Massena Country Club members,” Club Pro Tom Siddon said.

He recalled that Dr. Welch had been president of the Massena Country Club in the 1968-1969 time-frame. Mrs. Welch had also served a president of the Women’s Golf Association.

“They spent a lot of them at this place. You could always find them on the range, especially Al. He loves to practice, and he’s always giving advice,” Mr. Siddon said.

Dr. and Mrs. Welch contributed to many of the aesthetics found today at the Massena Country Club, he said.

He said they were involved in the placement of a “beautiful entrance sign,” as well as flowers and flower beds on holes 1 and 18.

“They helped create, build and unify the course that way,” Mr. Siddon said.

Dr. Welch was also instrumental in creating and enlarging sand bunkers on hole 18, he said.

Although he was unable to be present for Sunday’s ceremony, Jerry Welsh sent a letter thanking the Welch’s for their efforts.

“Congratulations on having the Massena Country Club clubhouse named in your honor. It could not have been awarded to anyone more loyal and dedicated to club members. You are always first-hand competitors and leaders. Because of your concerns, limitless time and generosity for many years, the Massena Country Club is a better place today,” Mr. Welsh wrote.

Mr. Welch said he was thankful for the recognition he and his wife received.

“It’s more than I ever expected. I know it’s sincere,” he said.
