Nature Center offering number of programs over Memorial Day Weekend


MASSENA - The Friends of the Robert Moses State Park Nature Center, Inc. announce a weekend full of full programs for the community. The public is invited to pre-register for many fun free programs to be held Saturday though Monday.

All programs will meet at the trail head and adults are asked to stay with children. Programs are being offered though the “Mind, Body, Soul- Come Alive” grant, funded by the Alcoa Foundation. Each program has been designed to encourage participants to be active outdoors and learn new skills.

“Monthly Meditation Circle”

This monthly “Meditation Circle,” will be held from 10-11 a.m. Saturday. Meditation techniques increase self-awareness and reduce stress. Each month, a new theme and/or facilitator will be introduced to give participants a large variety of exposure to various forms of meditation, all in an outdoor setting. This month the facilitator is Dolly Kirwan, Yoga by the River Instructor, who will conduct a mantra meditation. Please pre-register.

“Flower Pounding Workshop”

Flower Pounded Bookmarks will take place from 2-3 p.m. Saturday. Using nature as your inspiration, learn to make beautiful and colorful bookmarks out of flowers. This fun outdoor event is for all ages. Meet at the picnic tables and bring your hammer. All other materials are provided. Pre-registration is required.

“Campfire Cooking”

Campfire Cooking will take place at the Nature Center from 6:30-8 p.m. Saturday. Join the Nature Center staff for “Speared Apple Desserts!” These are delicious treats that you make yourself over an open fire in our outdoor fire pit. All ages welcome. A $1 donation is required per person. Pre-registration required.

“Outdoor Yoga for Kids”

From a cocoon to a butterfly, children will learn to spread their wings and fly. This yoga class is created specifically for young people with games of “Red Light, Green Light” and “Freeze Tag.” Join the Nature Center staff as they lead this fun and creative workshop from 11 a.m.- noon Sunday. Pre-registration required.

“Nature Print Workshop”

Learn all about printing from nature from 12-1 p.m. Sunday. Using things found in nature, make cool art and learn the art of print-making. Children and adults will make special cards to take home. All materials provided, but pre-registration required.

“Nature Painting Workshop”

A Nature Painting workshop for all ages will be offered from 1-3 p.m. Sunday. Take a guided hike through the beautiful nature trails and learn how to paint a landscape scene with watercolors. This workshop is free and all materials are provided, but space is limited, so pre-registration is recommended.

“Exploring Herbal Remedies”

Are you curious about herbs and their medicinal benefits? Join us for a workshop on making herbal tinctures for healthcare remedies at 4-5 p.m. Sunday. Meet at the Nature Center trail head. All materials are provided, but the class is limited. Please pre-register.

“Guided Bird Walk”

Do you know the difference between a “Red-Winged Blackbird” and a “Red-Bellied Woodpecker”? Come to a guided bird walk from 9- 10 a.m. Monda. Join the “Friends” staff as they lead you through the trails at the Nature Center to identify various birds. Binoculars are available for use on-site.

“Needle Felting Workshop”

Come learn all about Needle Felting from 10 a.m.-noon Monday. Join the “Friends” staff as they show you how to make colorful, 3-dimensional sculptures using the needle felting technique and colored wool. Pre-registration is recommended to reserve space.
