Copenhagen Central School class leaders


COPENHAGEN — The academic leaders for the class of 2013 at Copenhagen Central School are Sydney Rae O’Shaughnessy, valedictorian, Rachel Mae Bush-Muncy, salutatorian, and Steven Robert Kennell, vocational leader.

Miss O’Shaughnessy, daughter of Terry and Nadine O’Shaughnessy, has an academic average of 96.85. She is a member of the Youth Advisory Council, and president of the George S. O’Brien National Honor Society, after being inducted in her junior year.

She has been president of the Student Council for two years and was a Student Council representative her freshman and sophomore years. She is also a representative with the Lewis County Youth Bureau and a member of the varsity tennis team, ski club, Spanish club, Whiz Quiz and band.

She was a student peer tutor her sophomore and junior years, a Scrubby Bears American Red Cross hygiene instructor for three years and participated in New York State School Music Association instrumental solos and Instrumental Bi-County. She participated in school musicals, was a student director, attended the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Seminar and was a WWNY Channel 7 “Academic All-Star.”

She traveled to eight European countries during the summers of 2011 and 2012 with People-to-People and HOBY. She also has been a member of the West Carthage Volunteer Fire Department for two years.

She has qualified for several awards, including the 2012 University of Rochester George Eastman Young Leaders Award, Rochester Institute of Technology Computing Medal Award, Wells College Leadership Award, Wells College Henry Wells Scholarship, Marist College Presidential Scholarship and the Rod Serling Scholarship from Ithaca College.

Miss O’Shaughnessy will major in journalism at Ithaca College, where she has been accepted into the honors program.

Miss Bush-Muncy, daughter of Kevin Muncy and Wanda Bush-Muncy, has an academic average of 96.74. She is treasurer of the George S. O’Brien National Honor Society, where she was inducted in her junior year, is a Student Council representative and a member of Lewis County Teen Ambassadors, where she has served as treasurer.

She has been a peer tutor since sophomore year, a member of Whiz Quiz and on the varsity basketball and varsity soccer teams. She was a member of the junior varsity basketball team and junior varsity soccer team, a pee-wee coach, a member of the Majorettes and the Music Club.

Miss Bush-Muncy is a member of the Outdoor Club, Common GROUND volunteer organization, Book Club and Ski Club. She has been a Scrubby Bears American Red Cross hygiene instructor for three years, a member of the band and participated in New York State School Music Association instrumental and Bi-County Chorus. She was a New York State Music Association vocal participant, was named a two-time Area All-State vocal participant and participated in school musicals.

She has qualified for several awards, including the 2012 Elmira College Key Award, 2012 Rensselaer Medal Program Award, Sage Arts Award and Sage College of Albany’s Trustee Excellence Award.

Miss Bush-Muncy will major in business and pre-law at the University at Albany.

Mr. Kennell, son of Walter and Doris Kennell, has an academic average of 92.87. For two years, he has attended the gas/diesel mechanics program at Howard G. Sackett Technical Center, Glenfield.

He was named student of the quarter in April and was chosen as being most employable in gas/diesel mechanics.

Mr. Kennell is working at an internship at Widrick Truck and Diesel, Carthage. He plans to continue work on the Kennell family farm.
