The academic leaders for the class of 2013 at Watertown High School are Siraj A. Sindhu, valedictorian, and Mark Derbyshire, salutatorian.
Mr. Sindhu, son of Dr. Khalid and Nabeela Sindhu, has an academic average of 98.65. He is president of the Student Council, Model U.N., Whiz Quiz, Key Club and Book Club. He is vice president of Interact Club, a Rotary Leadership Institute graduate and co-captain of the schools Science Olympiad Team.
He serves as co-captain of the varsity boys basketball team, co-captain of the varsity boys tennis team and is a member of National Honor Society.
Mr. Sindhu volunteers at Carthage Area Hospital, where he interned with Dr. Mirza Ashraf, cardiologist, at North Country Urology, where he interned with Dr. Moshin Ali, at Samaritan Medical Center, where he cared for emergency room patients and aided nurses and biomedical engineers, and at Camp Hollis, Oswego.
He was accepted into the pre-med program at Amherst (Mass.) College, where he will also major in English or political science.
Mr. Derbyshire, son and stepson of Dr. Rachel E. Lewis and Roger Johnson and son of the late Dr. Garrett J. Derbyshire, has an academic average of 97.75.
He is the president of National Honor Society and Foreign Language Club. He plays alto saxophone in the schools Wind Ensemble and participates in Cross Fit.
Mr. Derbyshire is an Eagle Scout, constructing a kiosk for the Jefferson County Watertown and Soil Conservation District for his Eagle Project.
He is a sailing instructor for the Crescent Yacht Club Junior Division, where he teaches children ages 6 to 16.
Mr. Derbyshire plans to major in biology at Cornell University, Ithaca.
