Madrid-Waddington drops Edwards-Knox in Class D Baseball opener, Morristown, Harrisville prevail


MADRID - No. 4 seed Madrid-Waddington made use of just three hits on Wednesday in a 6-1 decision over No. 5 seed Edwards-Knox in the opening round of the Section 10 Class D Baseball Tournament.

The Jackets (9-6) scored five runs on two hits, three walks, and two hit batters in the first inning giving Greg Thompson plenty of support against the Cougars (6-10). Thompson finished with a five hitter allowing no walks and fanning nine batters as M-W advanced to play today’s winner between No 1 seed Heuvelton and No. 8 seed Parishville-Hopkinton next Tuesday.

“Greg Thompson pitched very solid and defensively we didn’t make mistakes. But we still had some mental errors that down the road could cost us. Having five days before the next game will give our pitchers some rest,” said M-W coach Justin Richards.

Rounding a day of upper seed wins No. 3 Morristown eliminated No. 6 Chateaugay 23-3 while No. 2 Harrisville rolled past No. 7 Clifton-Fine 13-2.

M-W 6 - E-K 1: Tanner Uppstrom was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and Zach Brock singled. Thompson followed with a walk to juice the bases for Jacob Barney who sent a pitch over the leftfielder’s head for a three-run triple. Losing pitcher Nick Davison, recorded his only strikeout for second out, before Jim Miller walked, James Hunt was hit by another pitch, Dan Cassada walked to load the bases, Uppstrom drew a bases-loaded walk and another run scored on passed ball.

Tyler Sharpestien singled in the third inning for E-K and scored on a Kaden Dandrow two out single.

The Jackets responded with a run in the bottom a as Mike Thew walked and scored on a Jim Miller RBI single. Darren Clark, Nick Davison and Jeremiah Randall supplied E-K’s other three hits in the game.

Morristown 23, Chateaugay 3: Ten runs in the second and nine in the third lifted the Rockets (11-4) as Devin Dulmage crushed a grandslam homerun and delivered a double plating six runs and Jon Love launched a two run homerun.

Bobby Simmons allowed just two runs in five innings fanning five batters and allowing three hits. Jacob Fox and Dakota Marshall pitched in relief.

Simmons, Luke King and Marshall all lined a double and a single while Karter VanArnam and Ryan Vollmer singled twice and Jacob Fox and Jake VanArnam each singled.

Chateaugay (5-10) received two hits from Corey Hill and singletons from Greg Holmes, Matt Swanson, Nick Ashline, Nick Kenny, and Zach Cowan.

Harrisville 13, C-F 2: Six runs in the sixth inning sealed victory for Justin Hartle who fanned four batters, allowed two walks and nine hits in the win for the Pirates (15-3). Jared Dreythaler went 2-5 with a triple and two runs scored, Nathan Weaver and Nick Weir each finished 2-4 with two runs scored. Chris Sullivan went 2-3 and scored three times while Tim Fowler (2-3 double), Joey Butts (2-2 double), Logan Thomas (1-4), Justin Brackett (1-3, 2 runs scored), and Hartle (1-3, 2 runs scored) also hit safely. Weaver also fanned two batters in relief.

Logan Hayes smacked a two run homerun in the seventh inning for Clifton-Fine (5-10). Dawson Kerr (2-4), Matt Russell (2-4), Andrew Hartman (2-3) all produced multiple hits with Carl Twyman, Mike Rust, and Jake Folsom each singled.
