Town of Alexandria wants grant to reduce water project’s cost

ALEXANDRIA BAY — Town officials are seeking a $500,000 North Country Regional Economic Development Council grant to reduce the Route 12 water project’s cost for residents and businesses that would be served by the municipal waterline extension.

Alexandria Supervisor Dale D. Hunneyman said the town could break ground on the estimated $2.8 million work in the late fall if it can secure the grant funding.

The grant application is due Friday and the town is expecting the funds to be awarded in August.

Already, the town government has secured $500,000 through an Empire State Development Corp. grant and is seeking low-interest state loans to cover the remaining costs of extending the water line by 3 miles.

Town officials have been working on the Route 12 project for years, believing it could lead to further economic growth.

Pointing to the new Price Chopper plaza near the Thousand Islands International Bridge as an example, Mr. Hunneyman said the Route 12 corridor has potential to attract more businesses — and more Canadian shoppers — if only there is adequate infrastructure to support such developments.

If Alexandria is awarded the grant, the town could put the project out to bid almost immediately because it is more or less “shovel-ready,” Mr. Hunneyman said.
