A Malone man has revived a dead mixed martial arts (MMA) studio in Bombay and is now offering training to all ages.

Cory LaPlant, 35, said the CNY MMA School, formerly D and B Combat, is his second currently in operation, the other being located in Oswego.

LaPlant’s school teaches authentic Gracie Brazilian Jiujitsu, a style of martial arts with a heavy emphasis on grappling and submission holds pioneered by Helio Gracie, a legend among martial arts fighters. The Gracie style is also a big part of many fighters’ technique in Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

“It’s, basically, the smaller man can subdue the larger man with technique and style, not so much size and muscle,” LaPlant said.

A certified blue belt, LaPlant said training in the Gracie style involves equal parts mental and physical conditioning. For kids, he uses a program called “ABCs of Success: Goal-Setting Through Board-Breaking,” which shows the youths what a goal is and how to realistically set and achieve them. At the end of the day, they learn how to safely break a board with a kick.

“There’s a mental aspect of being a better person ... you check your ego at the door and learn to carry yourself in a real positive manner,” LaPlant said. “They go from kid to martial artist to successful martial artist.”

He has fought professionally and used a similar goal-setting process to defeat Russian MMA fighter Kirill Gron, who beat LaPlant in about 90 seconds the first time they met on the mat.

LaPlant also gives anti-bullying and Kid Safe seminars outside of the MMA school.

Classes at CNY MMA School are for age divisions 5 through 7, 8 through 12, and adult. They also host open mat, live grapple with submissions one night per week.

Anyone seeking more information on the school, which is located on state Route 95 just south of its intersection with Route 37, can contact LaPlant at (607)745-4999.
