OGDENSBURG Sellers filled their lawns with old clothes and forgotten furniture, outgrown toys and out-of-date appliances Saturday for the annual Chamber of Commerce citywide garage sale.
Bargain hunters scoured the city for treasures among other peoples trash, stopping at their choice of the 65 participating houses. The Chamber of Commerce sold directories listing all of the sales for $2 apiece.
We keep jumping from one spot to the next. Were heading for one and we keep stopping at others, said Barbara J. Gardner, Brasher.
Its part of the fun, said her husband, Raymond J. Gardner.
I like looking for the old and unusual, Mr. Gardner said.
The sale is a yearly highlight and a chance for quick cash for city residents.
Shannon M. Demers started to advertise her sale on Facebook three months ago. Shes been participating in the citywide garage sale for the last eight years.
We sold a ton of stuff today, she said. Most of the time fishing stuff sells.
Despite chilly weather and cloudy skies, plenty of people visited with cash in hand.
Its cold, but as long as its not raining, its good, said Ashleigh L. Bushey, who said plenty of people were buying DVDs and clothing from her familys busy sale.
This is our first time this year. Weve done pretty well so far, said Amanda T. Cahrs, who was selling childrens clothing with her mother, Ellen A. Mallette.
K. Laurie Turriff owns the Something Old, Something New thrift shop in Iroquois, Ontario. Any weekend there is a communitywide garage sale, on either side of the border, she is there to scoop up any bargains she can get.
When Im missing certain things I come down here and get them, she said. Its much better than the Canadian sales.
Ms. Turriff said she occasionally finds a spectacular deal, such as a $3 necklace she purchased last year and sold for more than $300.
It all depends on what youre looking for, she said. You need to know your things.
Late in the afternoon is the best time to look, she said, because sellers are willing to cut prices as the day draws to a close. She will return next week for Heuveltons garage sale.
Although Saturday was the main event, some sales continue today.
