Richard A. Chase, 87, of 613 Stone Circle, Ives Hill Retirement Center, Watertown, passed June 7, 2013 at the Samaritan Medical Center.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 10 at the Bruce Funeral Home, Black River. Burial with military honors will follow at the Black River Cemetery.
Calling hours will be 2-5 p.m. Sunday, June 9 at the funeral home.
Born on August 13, 1925 in Martinsburg, NY, son of Edgar Chase and Sadie Finney, he graduated from Lowville Academy in 1943.
He entered the US Navy on June 19, 1944. He served aboard several vessels and was honorably discharged on July 8, 1946 as Motor Machinists Mate Third Class. He received the American Theatre Medal and WWII Victory Medal.
Upon returning home from the service he married Elizabeth M. Clemons on December 12, 1947 at the United Methodist Church in Lowville. The couple resided in West Carthage for 25 years and moved to Black River in 1988 where they built a home. In 2012 they moved to the Ives Hill Retirement Center.
Mr. Chase worked for Climax Manufacturing Co. in West Carthage for 43 years in the maintenance department, retiring in 1988.
He was a member of the Carthage American Legion, Carthage Rod and Gun Club, NRA, a former member of the United Methodist Church in Carthage. He enjoyed trap shooting, hunting and fishing.
Surviving are his loving wife of 65 years, Elizabeth M. Chase, Watertown; a son and daughter in law, Francis R. and Carol S. Chase, Ithaca; two daughters and three sons in law, Sandra C. and Howard F. Ames, Black River, Cheryl L. and James E. Frezza, Syracuse, Gary Miles, Gouverneur; two sisters and a brother in law, Jean Elizabeth and Walter Newell, Fort Ann, NY, Jane M. Fuda, Valencia, NY; 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
A daughter, Debra Jean Chase Miles and two brothers, Harold and Robert Chase all died before him.
